I’m tired of hearing all the complaining about the Fairbanks music scene. The bands are here. The fans are here. The venues are here. The fans just aren’t going to go to the shows. The complaints about the venues are ridiculous. Yes, the sound at some places isn’t the best. Yes, some places restrict what kind of music can be played. SO WHAT! One thing makes or breaks a music scene…. MONEY. It’s simple, if the fans don’t go to the shows, the venues don’t make money. If the venues don’t make money, then there’s no more shows. No shows means the bands either move on or die. The venues aren’t being greedy. They need the money to survive. The bands are in the same situation. If you want more local bands doing more local shows, go to every one you can. The only way the scene will survive is if fans go to shows. The only way the scene will grow is if fans go to every show, even if they don’t like the venue or a band. The fans control the music scene much more than the bands or the venues. Most of what I’ve seen and heard from local fans lately is apathy and whining. If you don’t want a local scene, fine. Shut up and go home. Let those of us who are working for the scene do what we can without having you drag it down. If you want a growing local scene, change your attitude and do something about it.
If you want bands to make this a stop on a tour, the same applies. Go to the shows. Godsmack should have sold out in two weeks considering the show they put on the first time they were here. If you want many bands that are actually on a record label to come up here, you have to sell out the Carlson Center for every band that does put on a concert. Nearly selling out will just continue getting us 3 or 4 bands a year tops.
Ok. I’m going to spell it out one more time in case it hasn’t sunk in yet. If you want a thriving music scene, put your money where your mouth is. Go to every show you can.

Not really. It should be pretty obvious to anyone who has been part of a music scene anywhere.
I've been working on getting 4 different bands here. None of them have played here before, so it all boils down to if it's worth their time financially. I don't have control of a venue or the capitol to bring them over on faith. So it has to be proved to them that it will be worth their time. Fairbanks used to have a lot more bands come up. If the fans get it in gear and return Fairbanks back to near that level or better, then it'll be a lot easier to get more bands to come here. That's the way it works. Exponential expansion, or diminishing returns. The fans determine the path and end result.

Anways...
I've been writing mostly for european music zines under a different penname for the last year or so. (Sliding in as many references to local bands as I can get away with. ;D ) I've pretty much stopped writing for the local scene. Between a few renegade zines, this message board and Fairbanks Square, it's pretty well covered. I will occasionally run a print and/or post here if I think a particular item needs more attention or a band gives me a demo to review.

I've been watching some webcast concerts and having voip interviews with a couple of Swedish death metal bands. If they're interested would you all pack the Dog's Bar to see a couple of unsigned bands and would the Dog's Bar be willing to have them play? These guys don't have much of a "show" yet. I'ts just get up on stage and rip thru their music. Anyways, it's a long shot, but if the chance occurs, does this scene want it?
